+The comments above pertain to the handshake backward compatibility break introduced by BIP37 (the changed version message size breaks communication with any older peer that validates the message size). These comments are a caution about making future changes to the version message, and did not intend to discourage BIP60. However, while it would have been better for BIP37 to have not changed the version message schema at all, and to have used a fixed size in doing so (as recommended by BIP60), it's not probably worth the effort to employ this requirement now.
